Position Requirements
Knowledge/Technical Skills
- of the relevant acts, regulations, guidelines and department policies and procedures as they pertain to the salvage and disposal of motor vehicles
- of motor vehicle makes, models, years, parts, equipment and market value - of administrative practices and procedures
- of the relevant computer applications and databases to enter, edit and retrieve data and to verify accuracy of salvage information
- to keyboard at the established proficiency level
Analytical/Problem Solving Skills
- to evaluate sale/disposal methods and determine appropriate method for situation
- to identify and record appropriate information of motor vehicles delivered to salvage yard - to investigate discrepancies and error situations and recommend appropriate course of action
- to develop and monitor sales inventory

Communication/Interpersonal Skills
- to provide courteous service to customers
- to occasionally communicate with people in a conflict situation
- to explain salvage and vehicle disposal policies and procedures to staff, customers and buyers in understandable terms

Work Environment
- exposure to noise, dirt and dust and all-weather conditions when verifying vehicle information
- exposure to harmful materials, fluids and fumes when inspecting vehicles - requires use of personal protective equipment as outlined by Occupational Health and Safety
Must meet the provincially legislated requirements of the Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA).
The above requirements would typically be met through high school graduation plus a few years of related experience in the motor vehicle salvage/wrecking industry.
Licensing/Accreditation
- valid BC Driver’s license
Typical Responsibilities
Leadership
Provides full supervision to reporting staff. Plans, prioritizes, monitors and schedules work to ensure unit performance
objectives are met. Trains staff and provides technical guidance. Coaches, counsels, motivates and evaluates performance of staff. Participates in the recruitment, testing, interviewing and hiring of staff.
Movement/Storage of Vehicles
Co-ordinates movement and storage of motor vehicles within a regional salvage yard facility. Confirms through physical checks the accuracy of vehicle information, i.e. VIN number, registration, plate, name, etc.
As per procedures and within limits of authority, processes information into database, designates vehicles as salvage or dismantle requests corrections where necessary, authorizes inspections, tracks location until disposal is complete, etc.
Vehicle Sales
Determines salvage value of all vehicles for sale purposes and the method of sale or disposal in line with audit requirements. For total theft vehicles, determines if enhancements to a vehicle prior to sale are cost effective in terms of potential increased sale value. Ensures salvage digital images are taken and uploaded to salvage web. Develops and monitors sales inventory and determines reserve price on unique items. Organizes and co-ordinates disposal of general salvage and corporate vehicles (as required), checks bids, and awards sale.
Technical Resource
Acts as technical resource to claims staff on issues related to movement, storage and sale of salvage vehicles. Receives, reviews and forwards to manager for approval, new buyer applications and modified buyer agreements. Receives, reviews and forwards to manager for approval, annual renewals for business licenses, dealer licenses and land use contracts from various municipal, regional and provincial government agencies. Updates databases with buyer information, authorizes buyers to use the salvage database, and provides system training and assistance for new and existing buyers.
Customer Service
Responds to enquiries from buyers, staff and customers, explains salvage and vehicle disposal policies and procedures, and resolves buyer discrepancies, such as additional damage found, processing refunds, etc.. Escalates issues to the Manager, as appropriate.
Record Keeping/Reports
Prepares, distributes and maintains various administrative and statistical reports and staff records.
Generates monthly salvage activity report, reconciles and forwards to revenue accounting. Completes relevant customs and duty forms for out of province vehicles. Performs monthly salvage file reviews and forwards results to manager for action if required.
Performs other related duties that do not affect the nature of the job.
