Reporting to the Director Marketing & Communications, the Manager Media Relations & Issues Management leads the media relations and issues management team, focused on both proactive and reactive communications delivery through the media for the organization. Leads the daily management of responses to issues impacting the organization.
Position Responsibilities
- Leads and participates in the implementation of the media relations strategy. Provides daily input to social media response to ensure alignment with overall messaging.
- Leads the development, coordination and delivery of key media messages, materials and timely responses to media enquiries, ensuring consistency, an integrated approach and alignment with corporate priorities.
- Leads the selection of appropriate spokesperson or subject matter expert and medium (print, radio, TV) ensuring maximum value for each media coverage scenario.
- Speaks on behalf of the Corporation to media on key corporate issues.
- Manages the development and maintenance of relationships with key media reporters, editors and publishers.
- Leads media monitoring and analysis to stay informed, identify and manage potential issues, identify opportunities to create positive media coverage, and to assess the effectiveness of media plans and activities.
- Mitigates organizational risks to the Corporation's reputation through issues management, ensuring team is prepared with responses and the appropriate communications strategy is identified to manage reputational risks.
- Advises, trains and provides guidelines for key communicators at the executive level and in business units/regions on media relations, social media and issues management activities; and ensures a common understanding of the role that communications/media relations play in helping to achieve business objectives.
- Manages the unit, including selection, development, and direction of reporting staff; and development and management of the unit budget and business plan; and also contributes to the Department budget and business planning processes.
Position Requirements
- Knowledge of the principles, concepts, standards and best practices in the media relations and communications fields, and related functions including stakeholder relations, issues management, and government relations.
- Familiarity with the nature of issues and communication challenges within the corporate environment.
- Knowledge of corporate and divisional goals, strategies, objectives and lines of business.
- Knowledge of insurance industry, products and services.
- Familiarity with the current legislative and regulatory environment, government structure, and political relationships and practices.
- Interpersonal, relationship building skills.
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication skills, including written and spoken.
- Specialized training is typically recognized by an undergraduate degree and/or a professional designation in a technical/business/scientific field.
- Many years of related direct/indirect work experience in a continuous learning environment is typically required for someone to perform this job competently.

Work arrangements defined:
- Hybrid 8 – you will work a minimum of 8 days in a 4-week period at your primary office headquarters (typically 2 days per week). The remaining days will be remote within British Columbia.
