Position Highlights:

Are you an experienced customer service professional with strong knowledge of the rules of the road? If so, consider an opportunity to step into the Driver Examiner role at our Nelson Driver Licensing Office.

Driver Examiners play an important role in supporting road safety across British Columbia. In this position, you’ll assess driver competency through road tests while guiding customers through key licensing milestones. This is a highly visible role that requires sound judgment, professionalism, and a strong commitment to customer service.

You’ll work closely with a supportive team and leadership group while also operating independently throughout your day. In addition to conducting road tests, you will support customers at the Driver Licensing Centre by providing information on licensing processes, policies, and procedures.

This role is well-suited to individuals who are confident making decisions, comfortable delivering clear and constructive feedback, and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct road tests for commercial and passenger vehicles (Class 1–8) to assess drivers’ knowledge, skills, and safe driving ability
  • Administer re-examinations in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations
  • Apply sound judgment and decision-making when evaluating driver performance
  • Provide clear, constructive feedback to customers following their road tests
  • Support Driver Licensing Centre operations by assisting customers with inquiries, processes, and transactions between road tests
  • Manage scheduling and workflow to meet daily service and testing targets
  • Work independently while contributing to a collaborative, customer-focused team
  • Adapt to a variety of working conditions, including weather and customer vehicle environments

Position Requirements:

  • A valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence (or higher) with a clean driving record
  • Strong customer service skills with a professional and respectful approach
  • Confidence in making independent decisions in dynamic and sometimes challenging situations
  • Ability to deliver clear, constructive feedback, including difficult conversations
  • Comfort working in varied weather conditions and inside customer vehicles
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Solid computer and data-entry skills; cash-handling experience is an asset

Additional requirements include:

  • Successful completion of a health assessment based on the job requirements
  • A clean criminal record check through the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, as required under the Criminal Records Review Act

The Driver Examiner position involves working in all weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of the Class 5/7 training and testing during the probationary period.

Some locations may require regular overnight travel to conduct road tests or support nearby communities. Overnight travel may also be required for training, meetings, and regional coverage. Hours of operation are subject to change, and shifts may be scheduled Monday to Friday or Tuesday to Saturday.
